On The Move

Material: formboard, cotton, force sensor

Software: Touch Designer, Arduino

2024 May

This art piece is inspired by an old saying “Carpe diem seize the day.” It means  " capture the time and enjoy yourself while you have the chance". However, on the opposite side, the hardest people try to control something they will fly through you. Not everything in life is controllable and people should deal with the loss and accepting everything in the world has their own laws.

The main body of the art piece is formed by a form board and layers with cotton. From one perspective it mimics the outlook of the cloud and on the other hand, it was used to increase the bounce of the force sensor to increase the sensitivity of the force sensor. When the audience touches the force sensor harder representing the move of control, the light in the touch designer will automatically shift which mimics the image of light transfer and the image of losing control. The interaction will be the audience trying to control the shift of light consequently failing.

During this semester I did a lot of practice between different techniques and there is one important lesson I learned is to control the information in my art piece so it will be more straightforward and relatable. In this piece, I want to challenge myself to use a simple interaction to trigger the audience sensor, while at the same time using a kind of negative interaction move to inspire the audience to explore
